West Lulworth is a small Dorset village on the Jurassic Coast, just a short walk from the famous Lulworth Cove.
Surrounded by rolling countryside, dramatic coastline and traditional Dorset cottages, the village makes an excellent base for exploring Lulworth, Durdle Door and the wider Purbeck coast.
While many visitors come to see the Cove and Durdle Door, West Lulworth is worth exploring in its own right. It’s a place to slow down, wander through the village, enjoy a meal or drink and experience a quieter side of the Jurassic Coast.
Where is West Lulworth?
West Lulworth sits on the Dorset coast, around 10 miles west of Swanage and approximately 10 miles east of Weymouth.
Lulworth Cove is immediately south of the village and can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
Durdle Door is also within walking distance, with the popular coastal route taking you over the hills between the two landmarks.
The village is part of the Lulworth Estate and sits within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Exploring the village
West Lulworth is small enough to explore on foot.
Traditional cottages and stone buildings line the village, with narrow lanes leading towards the Cove. The village has a distinctly Dorset character, and it’s easy to see why it has remained such a popular place to stay.
Take a wander away from the main route towards the Cove and you’ll find a quieter side to Lulworth, particularly outside the busiest summer months.
The village is also home to several places to eat and drink, making it easy to stop for lunch, dinner or a drink after a day exploring the coast.

Lulworth Cove from West Lulworth
One of the great advantages of staying or spending time in West Lulworth is how close you are to Lulworth Cove.
The Cove is just a short walk from the centre of the village, so you don’t necessarily need to move your car once you’ve arrived.
From the Cove, you can explore the beach, walk along the shoreline or join the South West Coast Path towards Durdle Door and the wider Jurassic Coast.
Walking from West Lulworth
West Lulworth is a great starting point for coastal walks.
The best-known route is the walk from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door, taking you over the dramatic hills and cliffs of the Jurassic Coast.
There are also longer walks through the surrounding countryside and, when access allows, into the Lulworth Ranges – our particular favourite is the circular walk to Mupe Bay.
The terrain around Lulworth can be steep and uneven, so sensible footwear is recommended.
West Lulworth and Durdle Door
Durdle Door is within walking distance of Lulworth and can be reached via the spectacular coastal path from Lulworth Cove.
The walk from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door is around 1.5 miles each way, although the steep coastal terrain means it takes longer than the distance might suggest.
Along the way you’ll pass Man O’War Bay and some spectacular sections of the Jurassic Coast.
A village to stay in
West Lulworth makes a particularly good base if you’d like to explore the Jurassic Coast without having to drive between attractions every day.
Staying in the village puts Lulworth Cove within easy walking distance, while Durdle Door, the Lulworth Estate and surrounding countryside are all close by.
There are cottages, B&Bs, inns and other accommodation options in and around the village.
Stay in the heart of West Lulworth
If you’re looking for a small cottage, Honeysuckle Cottage is a traditional thatched cottage in the village, with private off-road parking and Lulworth Cove just a short stroll away.
West Lulworth outside summer
West Lulworth can feel very different outside the main summer season.
Spring brings fresh greenery and longer days, while autumn and winter offer quieter paths and beaches and a more dramatic side to the coast.
If you’re visiting outside the busiest months, you’ll often find that the village and surrounding landscape have a much more peaceful feel.
It’s one of the reasons staying in the village can be so enjoyable — you’re here after many of the day visitors have gone home.

It’s a traditional Dorset village surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery on the Jurassic Coast — and a great place to slow down and explore at your own pace.
