Man O’War Bay
Man O’ War Bay is a beautiful little beach on the Jurassic Coast, just east of Durdle Door.
With clear blue-green water, pale cliffs and a mixture of sand and shingle, it’s one of the prettiest spots on this stretch of the Dorset coast. It’s also easy to combine with a visit to Durdle Door, making it a popular stop on a day exploring the Lulworth area.
The beach sits in a sheltered bay beneath the cliffs, with the distinctive Man O’ War rock formation visible just offshore.
Where is Man O’ War Bay?
Man O’ War Bay is immediately to the east of Durdle Door.
If you’re walking along the coast from Lulworth Cove towards Durdle Door, you can continue on to the bay after reaching Durdle Door.
The beach is also accessible from the Durdle Door side via a steep flight of steps from the cliff top. The final descent is steep and isn’t suitable for wheelchair users.
What is Man O’ War Beach like?
Man O’ War is a mixture of sand and shingle, with famously clear water.
It’s considerably smaller and more enclosed than Lulworth Cove, which gives it a wonderfully wild feel despite being close to one of Dorset’s busiest attractions.
The surrounding cliffs and unusual rock formations make it a particularly spectacular place for photographs.
It’s worth remembering that this is a natural beach rather than a traditional seaside resort, so don’t expect rows of beach huts, amusements or a promenade.
Can you swim at Man O’ War Bay?
Yes. Swimming is possible at Man O’ War Bay, and the clear water makes it a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling.
The Lulworth Estate specifically highlights Man O’ War Bay as one of the best places in the area for snorkelling because of the rocky marine habitat around the bay.
However, this is an exposed Jurassic Coast beach with steep cliffs and changing sea conditions. Always take notice of local safety information and use your judgement before entering the water.
Is Man O’ War Beach sandy?
There is some sand, but Man O’ War is a mixture of sand and shingle rather than a large sandy beach.
The beach can change considerably depending on tides and weather, so don’t expect it to look exactly the same every time you visit.
How do you get to Man O’ War Bay?
The easiest way for most visitors is to approach from Durdle Door.
From the Durdle Door car park, follow the path towards the famous arch and then take the steps down towards Man O’ War Bay.
The descent is steep, and you’ll need to climb the steps again on your return.
If you’re walking from Lulworth Cove, Man O’ War can be included as part of the coastal walk to Durdle Door.
Wear proper footwear. The paths and steps around Durdle Door and Man O’ War are steep, and this isn’t a flip-flop-friendly walk.

Man O’ War and Durdle Door
The two are so close together that it makes sense to visit them at the same time.
You can stand above Durdle Door and look across towards Man O’ War Bay, then walk down to explore the beach before continuing along the coast.
If you’re visiting for the first time, I’d allow plenty of time rather than treating them as a quick photo stop.
Can you walk from Lulworth Cove to Man O’ War?
Yes — and it’s one of the best ways to experience this section of the Jurassic Coast.
The route from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door follows the South West Coast Path and takes you over the dramatic cliffs between the two.
From Durdle Door, Man O’ War Bay is just a short continuation of the visit.
The route is beautiful but hilly, with some steep sections, so allow more time than the relatively short distance might suggest.
Is Man O’ War Beach dog friendly?
Dogs can visit the beach, but conditions and restrictions can vary, particularly during the busy summer months.
Always check the latest local signs when you arrive and keep dogs under control around the cliffs and other visitors.
Facilities near Man O’ War Bay
There aren’t extensive facilities directly on the beach.
The main facilities are around the Durdle Door car park, where you’ll find toilets and seasonal refreshments. Durdle Door Corner, at the cliff top, offers drinks, ice creams and other refreshments during the main season.
So if you’re planning a longer beach visit, it’s sensible to take water and anything else you need with you.

There isn’t a separate car park for Man O’ War Bay.
Most visitors use the Durdle Door car park and walk down from there.

A tip for visiting Man O’ War
Don’t rush it.
A lot of visitors arrive at Durdle Door, take a photograph of the arch and head straight back to the car park.
If you’ve made the journey, it’s worth continuing a little further to see Man O’ War Bay. The views from the cliff path are spectacular, and the beach feels noticeably more secluded than Durdle Door.
For a quieter experience, arrive early or visit later in the afternoon, particularly during the busiest summer months.
Staying in Lulworth
Man O’ War Bay is one of the reasons Lulworth makes such a good base for a Jurassic Coast break.
Staying in the village puts Man O’War within walking distance, while Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, the Lulworth Estate and surrounding countryside are all close by. It’s also just a 10 minute drive to Lulworth Castle.
There are cottages, B&Bs, inns and other accommodation options in and around the village.
