Lulworth Range Walks & Firing Times Guide

Plan your visit across the Dorset Coast Path and the historic Lulworth Ranges. Managed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), this stunning section of the Jurassic Coast—stretching from Lulworth Cove east toward Kimmeridge and including the lost village of Tyneham—is an active military training area.

When live firing is taking place, public access is strictly prohibited. Use this guide to check access schedules, trail routes, safety rules, and local opening times.

Public access to the range paths and Tyneham Village is permitted on most weekends and during extended MOD stand-down periods.

  • Weekend Access: Gates usually open by 4:30 PM on Friday (following range clearance) and remain open until 8:00 AM on Monday.
  • Tyneham Gate Hours: Vehicle access opens at 9:00 AM and closes at dusk. Exhibitions inside the schoolhouse and church run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The Range Walks and Tyneham Village are CLOSED on the following weekends due to scheduled military activity:

  • January: 17 – 18
  • March: 14 – 15
  • June: 13 – 14
  • September: 12 – 13
  • October: 10 – 11
  • November: 14 – 15

Extended Open Periods (Stand-Down Dates)

The Range Walks and Tyneham Village are OPEN DAILY across these periods (all dates inclusive):

  • Easter Stand-Down: 28 March – 12 April 2026
  • Early May Bank Holiday: 2 May – 4 May 2026
  • Spring Stand-Down: 23 May – 31 May 2026
  • Summer Stand-Down: 25 July – 31 August 2026
  • Christmas Break: 19 December 2026 – 3 January 2027

Note: Military operational needs can alter schedules at short notice. Always check local warning flags before starting your hike.

Critical Range Safety Rules

The Lulworth Ranges are used for live-armour tank firing and high-explosive exercises. Following these rules is mandatory for your safety:

  • Red Flags & Red Lamps: If red flags are flying by day or red lamps are lit by night, DO NOT ENTER. Firing is active.
  • Stay on Marked Paths: Stick strictly to the South West Coast Path and yellow-marked public walk routes. White/red posts mark range boundaries.
  • Never Touch Military Debris: Pyrotechnics, shell casings, or unexploded ordnance (UXO) may be hidden in grass or gravel. Do not pick up or kick any object. Report sightings to Range Control or the Police.
  • Keep Dogs Under Control: Dogs must be kept on short leads at all times to protect grazing livestock and keep them within marked trail corridors.

Visiting Tyneham Ghost Village & Worbarrow Bay

Evacuated in 1943 during WWII to allow Allied troops to train for D-Day, Tyneham remains a preserved snapshot of history.

  • Tyneham Village: Access is free (donation box at main parking area). Walk through preserved cottages, the restored Victorian schoolhouse, and St. Mary’s Church.
  • Worbarrow Bay: A 1-mile flat walking path leads from Tyneham car park to the shingle beach at Worbarrow Bay. Excellent for fossil hunting, coastal views, and coastal solitude.
  • Facilities: Vault toilets are located near the Tyneham car park. No shops or cafes operate in Tyneham—bring your own water and supplies.

1. Lulworth Cove to Mupe Bay

  • Distance: ~3 miles round-trip | Difficulty: Moderate (steep chalk hills)
  • Highlights: Spectacular clifftop views of Fossil Forest, Mupe Rocks, and quiet shingle beaches inaccessible by car.

2. Tyneham Village to Worbarrow Tout

  • Distance: ~2.5 miles round-trip | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Highlights: Explore the ghost village before walking down the track to the sweeping headland at Worbarrow Tout.

Vehicle access is permitted via the Elmes Grove gate (off the B3070/Whiteway hill) only when the ranges are open. The gate is unlocked at 9:00 AM and locked at dusk.

Cycling is permitted on specified tarmac roads within the range complex (such as the access road to Tyneham), but off-road coastal paths are restricted to foot traffic.
