Swanage

Swanage is a traditional seaside town on the Isle of Purbeck, with a sandy beach, Victorian pier, independent shops, cafés and plenty to do.

Around 30 minutes by car from West Lulworth, Swanage makes an easy day trip if you fancy a change from the cliffs and beaches around Lulworth Cove.

It’s also a particularly good choice if you’re visiting with children or want a more traditional seaside day out.

Why visit Swanage?

Swanage has a very different feel from Lulworth.

The town centres around a long sandy beach, with the Victorian pier stretching out into Swanage Bay. Behind the seafront you’ll find shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, while the surrounding Purbeck countryside provides plenty of opportunities for walking.

You can easily spend a whole day here, or combine Swanage with a trip on the Swanage Railway or a visit to Corfe Castle.

Getting to Swanage from Lulworth

Swanage is around 12 miles from West Lulworth, with a driving time of roughly 25–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

The most direct route is via Corfe Castle.

By steam train

For something a little more memorable, you can travel on the Swanage Railway.

The heritage railway runs between Norden, Corfe Castle and Swanage, with steam and diesel services operating on different dates throughout the year.

This gives you the option of leaving the car at Norden or Corfe Castle and travelling into Swanage by train.

Swanage Beach

Swanage’s sandy beach is one of the main reasons people visit.

The gently shelving water and traditional promenade make it particularly popular with families, while the beach is also a pleasant place to spend a few hours simply relaxing.

You’ll find cafés, ice cream shops and other facilities close to the seafront.

During the summer holidays, expect the beach and town to be busy.

Our tip

Don’t overlook the beach outside the main summer season.

Swanage can be particularly lovely in spring and autumn, when you can walk along the seafront without the crowds and then stop for lunch or coffee in town.

Swanage Pier

The Victorian Swanage Pier is one of the town’s best-known landmarks.

You can walk along the pier for views back towards the town and across Swanage Bay, and it’s also a popular spot for fishing.

The pier is also used for boat trips and diving, depending on the time of year.

Things to do in Swanage

There’s more to Swanage than the beach.

You could:

  • Walk along the seafront and pier
  • Explore the independent shops
  • Take a boat trip around the coast
  • Ride the Swanage Railway
  • Visit the Swanage Pier
  • Walk along the surrounding coastline
  • Combine your visit with Corfe Castle
  • Spend a few hours simply enjoying the beach and cafés

If you’re visiting for a full day, there’s no need to pack too much in.

Swanage works just as well as a relaxed seaside day as it does as part of a wider Purbeck adventure.

Walking around Swanage

Swanage is surrounded by some beautiful countryside and coastal walking.

The South West Coast Path passes through the wider area, with routes towards Durlston Country Park, Old Harry Rocks and Studland.

For a longer walk, you can make Swanage part of a route taking in some of the spectacular coastline around the eastern side of Purbeck.

If you’d rather have an easier day, simply walking along the seafront and around the town gives you plenty to see.

Swanage Railway

If you’re visiting Swanage from Lulworth, I’d strongly consider combining your trip with the Swanage Railway.

The heritage railway links Swanage with Corfe Castle and Norden, travelling through the Purbeck countryside.

It’s particularly enjoyable for families and anyone who likes steam trains, but it’s also a useful way to avoid driving and parking in Swanage on busy summer days.

The railway also runs special events throughout the year, including steam galas, dining trains and seasonal services.

Where to park in Swanage

There are several car parks around Swanage, including options close to the seafront.

Parking can become busy during the summer holidays, particularly around the beach and town centre.

If you’re visiting on a sunny weekend, arriving earlier is worthwhile.

Alternatively, consider using the railway and arriving in Swanage by train.

Is Swanage good for families?

Yes.

The sandy beach, shallow water, pier, ice cream shops and traditional seaside atmosphere make Swanage an easy choice for a family day out.

The Swanage Railway adds another attraction without needing to get back in the car, and you can combine the two with a visit to Corfe Castle.

It’s one of the easiest ways to have a classic Dorset seaside day from Lulworth.

Swanage and Corfe Castle in one day

These two destinations work particularly well together.

You could start at Corfe Castle, visit the village and castle in the morning, then take the Swanage Railway to Swanage for the afternoon.

Alternatively, park at Norden and travel by train to Corfe Castle before continuing to Swanage.

If you’re visiting in summer, I’d check the railway timetable before planning the day.
